Hamilton Social Worker & Psychotherapist Rabia Idris
Registered Social Worker

Rabia Idris

Rabia is a Registered Social Worker, having graduated with a Master of Social Work degree from Wilfred Laurier University in 2010.  She is a member of the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers.  She uses a mix of therapeutic methods including Mindfulness, Trauma Release, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy and Inner Child Therapy.

She works together with clients, getting to understand them and their experiences, both internal and external.  She believes that giving ourselves the opportunity to get to know ourselves better leads to finding themes and common threads, as well as strengths and abilities that come to the surface.

In therapy an emphasis is placed on not just the mental body, but also the physical and emotional bodies, learning to understand how they work together and impact one another.  While our physical body can be in only one place at a time, our emotions and mind are not confined in such a way.  They can travel, sometimes to pain from our past, or worries about the future.  This ability of our mind to wander can at times cause us suffering.  But it is also this very vastness of our minds which is a Powerhouse of Healing.

I enjoy spending time with family and friends.  When I can, I love to travel, seeing different parts of the world and also getting to know my own local area better through day trips and outings.

I also like to read, spend time in nature, and watch documentaries.

// Why Therapy?

I was inspired.

It was a summer job during my undergraduate education that led me to becoming a therapist.  I worked for a social work agency that significantly impacted and changed the direction of my life.  Seeing the Social Workers helping others and making a positive impact made me realize that I too wanted to help in this way.

I explored mental health around the world.

I was able to change my educational direction and worked in the field for 7 years before expanding on a second education that allowed me to study how different societies and cultures around the world and throughout history have approached mental health and healing.

We all have the power to heal.

This education led me to understand that as humans we all have an innate ability called our Inner Healing Intelligence.  This is our body and mind’s ingrained ability to heal itself, if we can give ourselves the care, tools, time, comfort and support needed to do so.  When we listen to our bodies, allowing our minds and hearts to work together, rather than fight each other, there is a tremendous opportunity for healing and growth.
