Children Carry Trauma Differently – Support Needs to Match
When a child or teenager experiences trauma – abuse, neglect, family violence, accidents, loss, or other overwhelming events – the impact shows up in ways that can be confusing: behaviour changes, emotional outbursts, withdrawal, sleep problems, school difficulties, or physical complaints without a clear cause.
These are not behaviour problems. They are trauma responses. And they require a therapist who understands how trauma lives in a child’s body, brain, and behaviour – and who knows how to work with that gently, safely, and effectively.
At Empire Psychotherapy in Hamilton, our child trauma therapists use evidence-based, trauma-informed approaches specifically designed for young people. Parents and caregivers are central to the healing process from the very first session.

A Child’s Trauma Does Not Have to Define Their Future
The Right Support Changes Everything.
Children are remarkably resilient – but resilience doesn’t mean they heal on their own. With the right therapeutic support and a family environment that reinforces safety and healing, children and teenagers recover from trauma and go on to thrive. Our Hamilton child trauma therapists bring evidence-based methods, developmental expertise, and genuine compassion to this work. Evening appointments available. No referral required.
Trauma in Children and Teenagers: What It Looks Like
Childhood trauma refers to any overwhelming experience that exceeds a child’s capacity to cope and leaves a lasting impact on their emotional, psychological, or physical development. Children and teenagers often cannot identify or articulate their trauma responses – which is why a trained therapist who understands how trauma presents in young people is essential.
Abuse and Neglect
Physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect are among the most significant adverse childhood experiences. Specialized, trauma-informed therapy is critical for children who have experienced these.
Family Violence
Children who have witnessed domestic violence or family violence – even without being directly harmed – carry significant trauma that affects their development, relationships, and mental health.
Accidents and Medical Trauma
Serious accidents, emergency medical experiences, and medical procedures can be traumatizing for children – particularly when they involve pain, loss of control, or separation from caregivers.
Loss and Bereavement
The death of a parent, sibling, close family member, or friend can be profoundly traumatizing for a child, particularly when sudden or violent. Developmental differences mean children grieve differently from adults.
Complex and Developmental Trauma
Children who have experienced repeated or prolonged trauma – particularly in early childhood or within attachment relationships – carry complex trauma that requires sustained, specialized therapeutic support.
Secondary Trauma
Children of first responders, healthcare workers, or parents dealing with serious mental health conditions sometimes develop secondary trauma responses that deserve attention in their own right.

You don’t have to carry this on your own.
Parents Are the Most Important Part of a Child’s Trauma Recovery.
When a child has experienced trauma, the most powerful healing factor is having safe, attuned caregivers. Our Hamilton therapists work with parents and caregivers alongside child sessions – providing education, practical guidance, and support so you can be the anchor your child needs.

Our Approach to Children’s Trauma Therapy
Our child trauma therapists use Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT) – one of the most rigorously researched and effective treatments for childhood trauma, explicitly designed to involve parents as active participants in their child’s healing.
For younger children, trauma therapy is delivered primarily through play – the natural language of childhood – using structured, therapeutically guided activities to process overwhelming experiences safely. For older children and teenagers, sessions incorporate more direct processing as appropriate to their developmental stage and readiness.
Safety, trust, and pacing are always the foundation. Nothing is rushed. Nothing is forced.
Parent Involvement in Child Trauma Therapy
- Psychoeducation about trauma and how it affects children developmentally
- Guidance on how to talk to your child about what happened
- Strategies for managing trauma-related behaviour at home
- Tools for supporting your child through trauma reminders and triggers
- Attention to caregiver wellbeing – supporting a traumatized child is hard

Why Hamilton Parents Choose Empire for Their Child’s Trauma Support

Developmentally Trained Trauma Specialists
Working with traumatized children requires specific developmental knowledge and trauma-specific training. Our child therapists have both – not general trauma therapy applied to kids.

Family-Inclusive from the Start
Parents aren’t kept at a distance from their child’s trauma treatment. They’re central to it. We provide active guidance, education, and support throughout.

A Safe, Child-Centered Space
Our therapy environment is designed to feel safe and welcoming to children. The pace is always set by the child – never forced or rushed.
Questions About Trauma Therapy for Children and Teens
My child has not talked about what happened. Can therapy still help?
Yes. Children often cannot or do not verbalize their traumatic experiences – and trauma-informed therapy doesn’t require them to. Play therapy and other non-verbal approaches are specifically designed for this.
How do I talk to my child about therapy?
We can help you with this. Many parents find it helpful to focus on what therapy offers rather than why the child is going – framing it as a place to understand feelings and learn tools.
Is it possible for my child to be retraumatized in therapy?
Trauma-informed therapy is explicitly designed to prevent retraumatization. We build safety before processing, and we always go at the child’s pace. Your child’s safety is the absolute priority.
I witnessed what happened to my child and I'm also struggling. Can I get support too?
Yes. Caregiver wellbeing is something we take seriously. Individual therapy for parents in this situation is available and important.
Is a referral required?
No. You can book directly online or by calling (905) 962-2220.
