Your Child’s Behaviour Is Telling You Something
Difficult behaviour in children is rarely just ‘acting out.’ More often, it’s a child communicating something they don’t yet have the words for – anxiety, overwhelm, unmet needs, a neurodevelopmental difference, or distress that hasn’t been identified yet.
At Empire Psychotherapy in Hamilton, our child therapists are trained to look beneath the behaviour and address what’s actually driving it. We work with children who have been diagnosed with ADHD, ODD, conduct disorder, or autism – as well as children who are struggling behaviourally without a formal diagnosis.
We also work closely with parents throughout, because the changes that happen in the therapy room only stick when they’re supported at home.
Meet Our Child Therapists
Our registered therapists have specialized experience working with children’s behavioural and neurodevelopmental concerns. Find the right fit for your child.
Early Intervention Produces the Best Outcomes
Specialized Support for Children Who Need a Different Approach.
Behavioural and neurodevelopmental challenges in childhood respond best to early, specialized intervention. Generic approaches often miss the mark because they don’t account for the neurodevelopmental differences or emotional experiences driving the behaviour. Our Hamilton therapists use evidence-based, child-specific approaches – and keep parents fully informed and equipped to support the work at home. Evening appointments available. No referral required.
Behavioural & Neurodevelopmental Concerns We Address in Children
This page focuses specifically on behavioural and neurodevelopmental concerns in school-age children and pre-teens. For teenagers, please see our Kids and Teens Therapy page. For young children under school age, please see our Young Children page.
ADHD in Children
Children with ADHD often struggle with sustained attention, impulse control, emotional regulation, and social relationships. Therapy helps children understand their brain, build practical skills, and develop more positive self-perception.
Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD)
Children with ODD present with persistent defiance, anger, and argumentativeness that significantly affects family and school functioning. Therapy addresses the emotional regulation and relational dynamics driving the behaviour – and equips parents with effective response strategies.
Conduct Disorder
More significant patterns of aggression, rule-breaking, and disregard for others’ rights that require specialized therapeutic intervention and a trauma-informed lens.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (School-Age Children)
Therapy for autistic school-age children focuses on the child’s own wellbeing and goals – not ‘normalizing’ behaviour. We support emotional regulation, social understanding when desired, and navigating school environments.
Learning and Processing Differences
Children with learning differences often develop anxiety, low self-esteem, and behavioural challenges as a secondary response to frustration and underperformance. Therapy addresses these emotional impacts alongside the academic challenges.

You don’t have to carry this on your own.
Parents Don’t Have to Navigate This Alone.
Understanding why your child behaves the way they do – and knowing how to respond effectively – makes an enormous difference. Our Hamilton therapists work directly with parents alongside child sessions, giving you the understanding and tools to support your child at home.

Our Approach to Children’s Behavioural & Neurodevelopmental Therapy
Our child therapists use a combination of play therapy, CBT for children, parent-child interaction approaches, and trauma-informed care – always adapted to the child’s developmental stage, personality, and specific concerns.
We don’t treat behaviour as the problem. We treat the child as a whole person, with respect for what they’re experiencing and what their behaviour is communicating. The therapy room is a safe, engaging space where children can start to understand themselves and build new skills.
Parent Involvement
- Regular parent consultations alongside your child’s sessions
- Psychoeducation about your child’s specific diagnosis or concern
- Practical strategies for responding to difficult behaviour at home
- Communication skills to improve your relationship with your child
- Coordination with schools and other providers when helpful

Why Hamilton Parents Choose Empire for Children’s Behavioural Support

Child-Specific Training
Working with children’s behavioural and neurodevelopmental concerns requires distinct clinical skills. Our therapists have specific training and experience in this area – not general practice adapted on the fly.

Parents Are Full Partners
We don’t just work with your child – we work with you. Understanding what’s driving your child’s behaviour and how to respond effectively is core to our approach.

Early Intervention, Lasting Impact
Behavioural and neurodevelopmental challenges addressed early in childhood produce significantly better outcomes. The sooner a child gets the right support, the more it shapes their long-term development.
Questions About Children’s Behavioural & Neurodevelopmental Therapy
My child has been diagnosed with ADHD. Will therapy replace medication?
Therapy and medication address different aspects of ADHD. Medication can help with attention and impulse control; therapy builds skills, emotional regulation, and self-understanding. Many children benefit most from both.
My child has ODD and is refusing to come to therapy. What do I do?
This is very common. Starting with a parent consultation is often the most effective first step – and we can discuss strategies for getting your child engaged. We’re experienced in working with reluctant young clients.
How much involvement will I have as a parent?
Significant. Parent consultation is a core part of our approach to children’s therapy – not an optional add-on. Your involvement is essential to lasting outcomes.
Does my child need a formal diagnosis to access therapy?
No. If your child is struggling behaviourally or emotionally – regardless of whether a formal diagnosis exists – they can access support at Empire Psychotherapy.
Is a referral required?
No. You can book directly online or by calling (905) 962-2220.
