Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person communicates, processes sensory information, and relates to the world around them. It is a spectrum, which means it presents differently in every individual – from highly verbal children who struggle primarily with social nuance, to non-speaking children who require significant daily support. ASD is not a disease, a deficit, or something to be fixed. It is a different way of experiencing the world – one that comes with real strengths alongside genuine challenges. At Empire Psychotherapy, our approach to autism is neurodiversity-affirming: we work with your child’s brain, not against it. Therapy focuses on what your child and family actually need – whether that’s support with emotional regulation, social understanding, school navigation, anxiety, or family dynamics – never on eliminating autistic traits.

About Autism Spectrum (ASD) Therapy
Why seek therapy?
Parents often seek therapy for an autistic child when the challenges of daily life are creating significant distress – for the child, the family, or both. This might look like intense meltdowns, difficulty transitioning between activities, anxiety about school or social situations, struggles with peer relationships, or simply the exhaustion of navigating systems not built for neurodivergent people. Therapy doesn’t change who your child is. It helps your child understand themselves better, build the skills they want to build, and feel more supported in the environments they move through every day. It also helps parents develop the understanding and strategies to be the most effective support system possible.
How therapy helps
Therapy for autistic children and teens at Empire is always built around the individual. In the early sessions, your therapist takes time to understand your child’s specific profile – their strengths, their challenges, their sensory needs, their communication style, and what they find most distressing. From there, sessions focus on what matters most to your child and your family. This might include emotional regulation skills, tools for managing sensory overload, strategies for navigating peer relationships, support with anxiety and demand avoidance, and building self-understanding and self-advocacy. Parent consultation is a core part of the process – helping you understand your child’s experience and respond in ways that reduce distress and build connection.
Benefits of Autism Spectrum (ASD) Therapy
Reduced Anxiety and Distress
Many autistic children and teens carry significant anxiety about unpredictable environments, social expectations, and sensory experiences. Therapy provides tools that meaningfully reduce that distress – making daily life more manageable for the whole family.
Stronger Self-Understanding
Children and teenagers who understand their own neurology are better equipped to advocate for themselves, communicate their needs, and develop a positive sense of identity. Therapy builds that self-knowledge in an affirming, supportive way.
Better Family Connection
hen parents understand how their child experiences the world, the relationship changes. Parent consultation helps families communicate more effectively, reduce conflict, and build a home environment where the autistic child genuinely thrives.
Your child’s brain works differently – and that deserves the right kind of support.

Our Approach to Autism Spectrum Therapy
Empire Psychotherapy’s approach to autism spectrum therapy is grounded in neurodiversity affirmation. This means we do not use approaches designed to make autistic children appear neurotypical. We do not use ABA or compliance-based methods. We work with the whole child – respecting their sensory profile, their communication style, and their own goals.
For younger children, sessions are often delivered through therapeutic play and structured activities that match the child’s developmental stage and engagement style. For older children and teenagers, sessions are more conversational and self-directed – with the young person leading on what they most want to work on.
We work collaboratively with other providers involved in your child’s care – including occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, developmental pediatricians, and school teams. Our goal is to be a genuinely useful part of a coordinated support system, not an isolated service.
Parent consultation is built into every phase of treatment. We provide education about autism and your child’s specific profile, practical strategies for home and school, and support for the very real emotional demands of parenting an autistic child.

Common Questions About Autism Spectrum (ASD) Therapy
Do you use ABA therapy?
No. Empire Psychotherapy does not use Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA). ABA focuses on changing autistic behaviour to appear more neurotypical, which research increasingly shows can cause harm and distress. Our approach is neurodiversity-affirming – we work with the child’s natural way of being, not against it.
My child has an ASD diagnosis but is 'high functioning.' Do they still need therapy?
The term ‘high functioning’ is not particularly useful clinically, and often masks real distress. Autistic children who appear to cope well externally frequently carry significant internal anxiety, exhaustion from social masking, and unmet support needs. If your child is struggling – in any way – they deserve support.
What if my child refuses to engage in therapy?
This is common, and our therapists are experienced in working with children who are initially reluctant. We go at the child’s pace, follow their lead, and build trust before anything else. We can also provide significant value through parent consultation even if the child is not ready to engage directly.
Can therapy help with meltdowns?
Yes. Meltdowns are typically the result of sensory overload, anxiety, or distress that has exceeded the child’s capacity to cope. Therapy helps identify the triggers and contributing factors, build regulation skills, and develop environmental supports that reduce the frequency and intensity over time.
Is a referral required?
No. You can book directly online or by calling (905) 962-2220.
History of Autism Spectrum (ASD) Therapy
Evolution of Treatment
Our understanding of autism has changed dramatically over the past several decades. Early approaches focused on making autistic people appear and behave as neurotypical as possible – through intensive compliance-based training, often delivered with little regard for the child’s comfort or wellbeing. These approaches caused significant harm, which is now well-documented in the research and the accounts of autistic adults. The shift toward neurodiversity-affirming care has been led substantially by autistic self-advocates and researchers – and represents a fundamental rethinking of what good autism support actually looks like.
A Modern Approach in Canada
In Canada today, best-practice autism support recognizes that autistic people are not broken neurotypicals – they are a natural variation in human neurology, with their own strengths, challenges, and ways of experiencing the world. Evidence-based therapeutic support focuses on reducing distress, building self-understanding, supporting mental health, and helping autistic individuals navigate systems and environments that were not designed with them in mind. At Empire Psychotherapy, our neurodiversity-affirming approach reflects this modern understanding – and is informed by the voices of autistic adults who have spoken clearly about what actually helps.
Your child deserves support that truly understands how they experience the world.
