Early Support Changes Everything
Children and teenagers face real, serious mental health challenges – anxiety, depression, social difficulties, trauma, attention challenges, and the pressure of navigating a world that changes faster than ever. These aren’t phases to grow out of. They’re experiences that deserve real, professional support.
At Empire Psychotherapy in Hamilton, our therapists work with young people using age-appropriate, evidence-based approaches – adapted to how children and adolescents actually think, feel, and communicate. For younger children, that might include play-based or creative techniques. For teens, sessions look much more like traditional talk therapy.
We also work closely with parents throughout the process – because supporting a young person’s mental health is always a whole-family endeavour.
Meet Our Therapists for Children and Teens
The Earlier the Support, the Greater the Impact
Your Child Deserves Help That Actually Meets Them Where They Are.
Children and teenagers respond to therapy differently than adults – and that requires a different kind of therapist. Our Hamilton team creates a safe, warm, genuinely engaging space where young people actually want to open up. We meet each child and teen at their developmental stage, their personality, and their concerns – and we keep parents informed and involved every step of the way. Evening appointments available. No referral required.
Therapy for Children and Teenagers: What to Know
Child and adolescent therapy applies the same evidence-based foundations as adult therapy – adapted to match how young people think, communicate, and process emotions at each developmental stage. Younger children often express themselves more naturally through play, storytelling, and creative activities. Teenagers typically engage in more direct talk-based therapy, with a focus on autonomy, identity, peer relationships, and their own goals.
Anxiety and School Refusal
Test anxiety, social anxiety, separation anxiety, and school refusal are among the most common concerns families bring to us – and among the most responsive to early, targeted therapy.
Depression and Low Mood
Children and teens experience depression differently from adults – often as irritability, anger, withdrawal, or a loss of interest in things they used to love. Recognizing it matters.
ADHD and Attention Challenges
Therapy helps young people develop practical executive functioning skills, emotional regulation strategies, and tools for navigating attention challenges in school and life.
Trauma and Adverse Experiences
Children who have experienced trauma, abuse, neglect, or significant loss need specialized, trauma-informed support from therapists trained to work with young people.
Social and Peer Challenges
Bullying, social exclusion, difficulty making friends, or navigating complex peer dynamics – therapy builds confidence and social skills at a formative stage.
Family Changes and Life Transitions
Parental separation, a new sibling, a school move, bereavement – major transitions affect children in significant ways. Therapy helps them process change in healthy ways.

You don’t have to carry this on your own.
Parents Don’t Have to Figure This Out Alone Either.
Supporting a child through mental health challenges is one of the hardest and most important things a parent can do. Our team works with you – not just your child. We’ll help you understand what’s happening, how to respond, and how to be the support your child needs at home.

Our Approach to Child and Teen Therapy
Getting a young person genuinely engaged in therapy requires the right environment and the right therapist – and we take both seriously. Our team creates a space that feels safe, non-clinical, and actually interesting to young people.
We draw on CBT for youth, play therapy, trauma-focused CBT, DBT skills for teens, mindfulness approaches, and narrative therapy – always matching the method to the child’s developmental stage and what they’re working through.
Parents and caregivers are essential partners. Alongside your child’s sessions, we provide parent consultation including psychoeducation, communication strategies that reduce conflict, guidance on when to step in and when to step back, and regular updates on your child’s progress.

Why Hamilton Parents Choose Empire for Their Children

Age-Appropriate, Specialized Care
Working with children and teenagers is a distinct clinical skill set. Our therapists have specific training and experience with young people – not just a general practice that occasionally sees kids.

Parents Are Partners
We keep parents informed and involved throughout the therapeutic process – giving you the tools and understanding to support your child at home, not just in sessions.

A Space Kids and Teens Actually Feel Comfortable In
Our clinic is designed to feel warm and welcoming – not clinical or intimidating. Young people engage more in therapy when they feel at ease, and we put real effort into that.
Questions About Therapy for Kids and Teens
How do I know if my child needs therapy?
If your child is showing persistent changes in mood, behaviour, sleep, appetite, school performance, or relationships for more than a few weeks, it’s worth speaking to a professional. Early support tends to produce better outcomes.
Will my child be forced to talk about things they don't want to?
Never. Our therapists build trust before anything else. Young people are never pushed to discuss anything before they’re ready.
How much will I, as a parent, be involved?
This varies by age. Parents of younger children are typically more directly involved. With teenagers, we balance confidentiality and parental involvement – discussing this with both the teen and their parents at the start.
My teenager says they don't need therapy. What do I do?
This is very common. We can offer guidance on how to have that conversation. Sometimes a low-pressure first session with no expectations is the best first step – teens often warm up quickly when the environment feels right.
Do I need a referral?
No. You can book directly online or by calling (905) 962-2220.
