Trauma Changes You – Healing Can Too

Trauma doesn’t always announce itself. Sometimes it’s a single overwhelming event. Sometimes it’s years of chronic stress, emotional neglect, or relational harm. Sometimes you don’t know that what you experienced was trauma until something brings it flooding back.

However trauma has shown up in your life, you don’t have to carry it the same way forever. At Empire Psychotherapy in Hamilton, our trauma therapists use evidence-based approaches – including EMDR, somatic therapy, and trauma-focused CBT – to help you process what happened safely, at a pace that feels right.

We follow your lead, every step of the way.

What Is Trauma?

Trauma is any experience that overwhelms your ability to cope – leaving a lasting imprint on your mind, body, and nervous system. It doesn’t require a dramatic single event to qualify. Trauma can be a single overwhelming experience, repeated or ongoing experiences, or it can accumulate over time through chronic relational harm, systemic stress, or a childhood environment that never felt fully safe. What makes something traumatic isn’t the nature of the event – it’s the impact it leaves.

Intrusive Memories and Flashbacks

Unwanted, vivid memories, flashbacks, or nightmares that return you to the experience without warning.

Avoidance

Actively staying away from people, places, situations, or even thoughts that remind you of what happened.

Hypervigilance

A persistent sense of being on guard, easily startled, or unable to fully relax – even in objectively safe environments.

Emotional Numbness or Disconnection

Feeling cut off from your own emotions, detached from the people around you, or going through life on autopilot.

Relationship Difficulties

Difficulty trusting people, intense emotional reactions in close relationships, or repeating painful relational patterns.

Shame and Self-Blame

A deep sense that what happened was your fault, or that something is fundamentally broken in you – both of which are trauma responses, not facts.

You don’t have to carry this on your own.

Trauma Therapy Works – and You Deserve Support That Is Built Around You.

Trauma-Informed Therapy at Empire

Trauma-informed care isn’t just a treatment model at Empire – it’s built into how every therapist on our team practices. Before any processing work begins, we help you build the internal resources and external safety needed to do that work effectively.

Our therapists draw on EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), Somatic Therapy, Trauma-Focused CBT, Narrative Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy for relational and attachment trauma, and Internal Family Systems (IFS). The method is always matched to the client.

Questions About Trauma Therapy

Do I have to talk about what happened in detail?

Not necessarily and not right away. Many effective trauma therapies focus on how trauma lives in the body and nervous system, and produce real results without requiring detailed verbal recounting of events.

What is the difference between trauma and PTSD?

PTSD is a specific clinical diagnosis that can develop following trauma. Not everyone who experiences trauma develops PTSD – but both can significantly impact daily life, and both respond well to trauma-informed therapy.

How long does trauma therapy take?

It depends on the type, severity, and complexity of the trauma. Some clients experience meaningful relief in 12 to 20 sessions; others with complex or developmental trauma benefit from longer-term support.

Will therapy make things feel worse before they get better?

Some clients notice increased emotional intensity in early processing phases – this is a normal and temporary part of the work. Your therapist will monitor this carefully and adjust the pace to ensure you remain safe throughout.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can book directly online or by calling us at (905) 962-2220.
