Specialized Support for the Way Your Brain Works

Neurodevelopmental conditions like ADHD and autism spectrum disorder are among the most misunderstood areas of mental health. Too often, people receive generic counselling that doesn’t account for how their brain actually works – and then conclude that therapy doesn’t work for them.

At Empire Psychotherapy in Hamilton, we know better. Our therapists bring specific training and real clinical experience in ADHD and autism – delivering support that’s actually designed for the way you think, feel, and experience the world.

We take a neurodiversity-affirming approach: we don’t try to ‘fix’ the way your brain works. We help you understand it, work with it, and build a life that fits who you actually are.

What Is Neurodevelopmental Therapy?

Neurodevelopmental therapy addresses the emotional, psychological, and practical challenges associated with ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, and related conditions. It is grounded in an understanding of how neurodevelopmental differences affect attention, emotion, relationships, communication, and daily functioning. The goal is not to change who you are – it’s to help you understand yourself better and build strategies that actually work for your brain.

ADHD in Teenagers and Adults

Therapy for ADHD focuses on executive functioning skills, emotional regulation, time management, relationship challenges, and the cumulative impact of years of misunderstanding or underdiagnosis. We work with teenagers navigating school and social life, and adults managing work, relationships, and daily functioning.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (Teens and Adults)

Therapy for autistic individuals focuses on the client’s own goals and self-understanding – never ‘normalizing’ neurodivergent traits. We support wellbeing, identity, communication, relationships, and navigating a world built for neurotypical people.

Late Diagnosis and Self-Discovery

Many people discover they have ADHD or are autistic in adulthood – often after years of misdiagnosis, confusion, or simply not having the language for their experience. Therapy provides a space to make sense of that history and move forward with clarity.

Emotional and Mental Health Co-Occurring Conditions

ADHD often co-occurs with anxiety and depression. Autism often co-occurs with depression, anxiety, and trauma. Our therapists address these intersecting concerns together.

You’re Not Broken – You Need the Right Support.

One of the most damaging effects of poor-fit therapy is the belief that therapy itself doesn’t work. If you’ve tried counselling before and felt it missed the mark, please don’t give up. Specialized, properly matched support is a genuinely different experience.

Our Approach to Neurodevelopmental Therapy

For ADHD, we draw on CBT adapted specifically for ADHD – which addresses the thought patterns, habits, and emotional regulation challenges unique to the ADHD experience. We also incorporate executive functioning coaching within therapy sessions, helping clients build practical systems that actually work for their brain.

For autism, we use a person-centred, neurodiversity-affirming approach. Sessions are always structured around the client’s own goals and priorities. We provide psychoeducation, support with communication and relationships when desired, and help navigating sensory, social, and workplace challenges.

What Clients Can Expect

  • A thorough intake to understand your neurology, history, and goals
  • A treatment plan built specifically for how your brain works
  • Neurodiversity-affirming approach: your brain is not a problem to fix
  • Practical skills and strategies for daily life
  • Coordination with other providers (psychiatrists, physicians) where helpful

Questions About Neurodevelopmental Therapy

Can therapy help ADHD, or do I just need medication?

Both have a role. Medication can help with core ADHD symptoms, but therapy addresses the skills, habits, emotional patterns, and relationship dynamics that medication alone doesn’t touch. Many clients find the combination most effective.

Can you help with autism even if I'm not formally diagnosed?

Yes. Many adults are late-identified or undiagnosed. You don’t need a formal diagnosis to access neurodiversity-affirming therapy.

I was just diagnosed with ADHD as an adult. What can therapy do for me?

A lot. An adult ADHD diagnosis often comes with years of accumulated self-criticism, failed strategies, and relationship strain. Therapy helps you make sense of your history, build practical skills, and develop a more compassionate relationship with yourself.

Do you offer support for autistic burnout?

Yes. Autistic burnout is a real and serious experience that our therapists are trained to recognize and support.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can book directly online or by calling (905) 962-2220.
