The therapeutic relationship in client centred therapy is characterized by three factors, which the founder of this therapeutic style believed were necessary for client change to occur. First, the therapist is genuine or in other words is themselves during the therapy session. The founder proposed this was necessary in order for clients to trust their therapist. Second, the therapist provides the client with unconditional positive regard, in other words the therapist values, accepts, and approves of the client even if they do not approve of all the clients’ behaviours. This allows clients to share without worrying about being judged or criticized. Third, the therapist is empathetic to the clients’ experiences, thoughts, and emotions.
Client centred therapy is not technique focused but rather focuses on listening, understanding the client, and asking open ended questions in order to facilitate self-discovery within the client. In client centred therapy clients are considered the experts of their own lives and the therapist acts as a facilitator who helps the client discover their own solutions. Client centred therapy is also non-directive which means that the therapist does not lead the session in a certain direction but rather follows the client’s lead.
