There are many different forms of self-harm such as burning, cutting, and self-hitting. There are several
different reasons people harm themselves such as to numb themselves, to cope with negative emotions,
to feel a sense of control, to end a dissociative episode (which is a disconnection between your mind
and your current surroundings), or to punish themselves.

People who self harm usually experience it as helpful in some way and this sense that it is helpful motivates them to continue the behaviour. Self harm is different than a suicide attempt. People engage in self harm as a way to cope and not with the
intention of ending their life.
