For some people receiving the diagnosis of a personality disorder can be devastating. There is often the perception that a having a personality disorder means that they are broken and cannot be fixed. This is not true. Having a diagnosis of a personality disorder does not mean you are unable to change your thoughts, feelings, or behaviours and it does not mean that you are defective in some way.

Individuals with personality disorders have a very fixed way of thinking, behaving, and feeling that they have been engaging in for a long time. In addition, they apply these ways of thinking, behaving, and feeling across a variety of areas in their lives. Often this can cause difficulty in their personal lives specifically in the area of maintaining personal relationships with others. Some of the ways they think, feel, or behave may also cause them significant distress.

However, it is possible for individuals to change their way of thinking, feeling, and behaving through therapy if they have a desire to do so.
