How To Cope With Cancer
A cancer diagnosis is a terrifying experience that can have a negative impact on the mental health of the person experiencing the diagnosis and their loved ones.
Some of the emotions that an individual diagnosed with cancer and their loved ones may experience are:
– Denial
– Stress
– Anger
– Fear
– Sadness
– Hopelessness
– Confusion
– Helplessness
– Regret
– Depression
– Anxiety
– Loss
Experiencing some or all of the above emotions after receiving a cancer diagnosis or a loved one receiving a diagnosis is normal.
There are many losses that individuals with a cancer diagnosis may experience: the loss of the way their physical body either appeared or functioned before cancer treatment, permanent loss of qualify of life, and loss of some parts of their personal or work identity. Individuals diagnosed with cancer are also at risk of developing mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic distress disorder.
The diagnosis can also continue to impact their life after cancer treatment is completed as there is often a fear that cancer will re-occur. Loved ones of individuals with a cancer diagnosis may experience anticipatory grief if the individual’s prognosis is uncertain or terminal.
Seeking therapy during this time can help you manage emotional distress that you may be experiencing during this difficult time in your life.
