Career/job changes and loss of career

Changing jobs can be a stressful experience. First, applying to jobs is time consuming and decreases the amount of time and effort you can put into self-care. Second, going to interviews can be an anxiety provoking situation, you may worry about how you are being perceived, if you are being judged, and if you will get the job. Third, transitioning to a new job can also be stressful, anxiety provoking, and overwhelming. It involves learning how to use new systems, meeting new people, worrying about whether the job will be a good fit for you, or if you will be valued. This already stressful experience can be compounded by sadness or anger if you had no choice but to leave your previous job for one reason or another for example because you were laid off, due to downsizing, or being fired.

Losing your job can have many negative impacts on your life and mental health.

Negative impacts of job loss:

• Chronic health conditions such as diabetes
• Financial impacts
◦ Loss of income if another job cannot be found right away.
◦ Not qualifying for severance pay if you were fired for cause.
◦ Losing your benefit coverage.
• Difficulty finding another job in your field.
• Feelings of failure, disappointment, hopelessness, anxiety, worry.
• Relationship strain.

The psychological impact of job loss can be even greater if you are fired. Some of the things you may experience are:

• Sadness
• Grief
• Anger
• Guilt
• Fear
• Relief
• It can also impact your self-esteem going forward.
• It may impact your view of others such as managers at your next job.

It can be even more difficult and stressful to change your career course altogether. It is a big decision that has drawbacks and benefits on both sides. You may be extremely unhappy in your industry but wonder whether you can afford to go back to school to have the career you want. Trying to make this decision may be overwhelming.
