Hamilton Psychotherapist Kim Chapman Team
Registered Social Worker

Kim Chapman

Kim is a Registered Social Worker/Psychotherapist who graduated with a Master of Social Work from McMaster University. She is a member of the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers and the Ontario Association of Social Workers.

Over her career, Kim has worked extensively in the areas of child welfare, mental health, youth justice and family law. She was a clinician on the panel of the Office of the Children’s Lawyer from 2002-2022, assisting families and the courts with complex issues related to separation and divorce. With more than 20 years of experience working with children, adults, couples and families, Kim sees each person’s life as a story with many chapters.

Some chapters are more difficult than others and transitioning from one to the next can be challenging. Kim is committed to partnering with clients to examine what their story has been, what it has meant for them and what they want the next chapter to be. Her approach to clinical work is an effective combination of several therapeutic approaches, drawing from Narrative Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy and Emotionally Focused Therapy.

In addition to her clinical work, Kim is an experienced clinical supervisor, offering a relational model of supervision for practicing clinicians. She is also an enthusiastic and engaging educator, providing mentorship in the classroom to the next generation of social workers. Kim has a clinical supervision certificate from Smith College, Massachusetts and is a Strong Interest Inventory practitioner.

// Personally

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my husband and our son and daughter who are currently attending Universities outside of Canada. As a family, we all believe that every day is an opportunity to embrace new experiences. While we watch our children live out the academic adventures of their dreams, my husband and I combine our own love of learning with our love of travel. We are grateful for every opportunity to watch the sun come up in a new country. We cherish all of the memories we have together, meeting wonderful people, enjoying beautiful places and experiencing as much of the world as we can.

Pictured: In 2024 I was selected by the US Embassy and World Learning as a mentor for the Canadian Youth Ambassador Program. This is a picture of me in Washington, DC – one of the wonderful places I visited and experienced with the Youth Ambassadors program.

// Why Therapy?

Sometimes life takes you place you don’t anticipate.

Like most people, my story is one with many plot twists and becoming a therapist was perhaps the most unexpected of them all. Although I feel like therapy chose me, rather than the other way around, the choice to stay has been all my own.

A place to find meaning and purpose.

I truly believe that self-awareness, insight, emotional flexibility and resilience are the drivers of success and well being. Therapy is an opportunity to focus on who we are, who we want to be and figure out what it takes to write a story where every chapter has the potential to be better than the last. Being a therapist became a part of my story unexpectedly, but it has brought great meaning and purpose to my life and I wouldn’t have chosen to write it any other way.

Author your own life.

My story is about helping other people become the authors of their own lives. For me, being a therapist means sitting beside people while they work through the chapters that led us to today and plan for the ones that are yet to be written. My role is to listen, reflect, and challenge people to live the life they want to live. There is no greater joy than seeing someone become the author of their own lives and write a story that is better than they could have even imagined.

Ongoing Education & Training

Emotionally Focused Therapy

2024

Attachment theory helps us to understand how our early experiences with caregivers impact our relationships throughout the lifespan. By understanding our behaviours as protective coping strategies, we create space to evaluate what strategies are no longer serving us well and to adopt new ways of being in relationship with others.

Advanced Clinical Supervision

2023

Smith College’s psychodynamic approach to clinical supervision focuses on the clinicians’ relationship to the therapeutic process and their role within it. Supervision is a cornerstone of effective clinical practice. Supporting clinicians in their professional development is critical for clinical work and clinician well-being.

Strong Interest Inventory

2024

The Strong Interest Inventory ®  assessment is a career exploration and planning tool designed to identify an individual’s interests and work preferences. It helps people explore potential careers and educational pathways that align with their interests, leading to more informed decisions and successful, fulfilling careers.
