Cognitive therapy is the forerunner of the famous Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. It was initially founded by psychiatrist Aaron Beck. Cognitive therapy is based on the assumption that beliefs, feelings, and behaviours are intertwined. By changing beliefs, one can also change feelings and behaviours. People have many conscious or unconscious thoughts about themselves, other people, and the effects of their own behaviours. When some thoughts do not align with reality (distortions) or the client’s goals, mental struggles can happen. Cognitive therapy suggests that mental health issues are mainly caused by erroneous beliefs and automatic thoughts. The therapist helps the client to first identify these thoughts/beliefs, analyze if there are any cognitive distortions in the them, dispute them rationally (e.g., through Socratic questioning), and form new, balanced, alternative thoughts/beliefs.

Cognitive therapy has been developed into rational emotive behaviour therapy (REBT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and third-wave modalities like acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). You can refer to specific pages about these different cognitive models.
