Abuse in the LGBTQQIP2SAA community
Sadly, discrimination is something individuals from the LGBTQQIP2SAA face on a regular basis. Often this discrimination goes beyond micro aggressions and insults and escalates into physical violence which as extremely detrimental impacts on the victims of this violence.
More than half of individuals in this community have had others threaten to physically harm them and one third have been physically assaulted by others. Dishearteningly this violence is not just perpetuated by strangers but also but individuals whose responsibility it should be to protect those in the LGBTQQIP2SAA community. When individuals come out to their parents thirty percent will be met with physical abuse and 26 precent will be kicked out by their parents. This results in a large proportion of the LGBTQQIP2SAA community experiencing homelessness.
The story does not improve for individuals who are a part of this community when we look at the school system. Seventy percent will experiencing bullying and of those 40 percent will be subjected to physical bullying. This results in those individuals being afraid to go to school, missing school, increased risk of depression, and suicide attempts.
Individuals in this community are also the victims of hate crimes which results in a greater risk of developing depression, anxiety, anger issues, and post traumatic stress disorder. In addition, 47 percent of transgender individuals have been the victims of sexual assault. Sometimes these violent attacks result in death.
