Common mental health disorders
There are many different mental health disorders each of which impact the individual in a unique way. However, all mental health disorders involve thoughts, behaviours, or emotions that the individual experiences as distressing and which negatively impact one or more areas of their life such as work, school, relationships, or recreation.
Common mental health disorders (with a prevalence in the population of more than 5 percent):
- Depression
- Anxiety disorders as a group, which can be broken down into several sub types.
- ADHD
There are many other mental health disorders that are less prevalent in the population but that still impact people such as:
- Bi-polar disorder
- Schizophrenia
- Personality disorders
- Eating disorders
Mental health disorders are treated with a variety of therapeutic techniques such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, Emotional Focused Therapy, and Cognitive Processing Therapy. The type of therapy chosen depends on the type of mental health disorder and what model fits best for the client.
